Position: Qualitative Researcher – RISE Programme in Indonesia
Terms of Employment: 2-year fixed-term contract with possibility of extension
Work Location: Jakarta, with some travel to project sites as required
Reporting to: Deputy Team Leader – RISE Programme in Indonesia
RISE Programme in Indonesia (RISE) is an education research program led by the SMERU Research Institute in partnership with the Amsterdam Institute for Global Health and Development (AIGHD) and the Mathematica Policy Research (Mathematica). The five-year programme (2017–2022) aims to identify issues facing Indonesia’s education system and to encourage changes in components of the education system, which is a necessity for improving learning outcomes. RISE specifically monitors the implementation of teacher reform in decentralised Indonesia and reviews how far the teacher reform can improve learning outcomes. In executing its research agenda, RISE partners with the Ministry of Education and Culture; Ministry of Research, Technology, and Higher Education; and a number of district governments.
Responsibilities:
- Supporting the Deputy Team Leader in developing, revising, and adhering to study timelines and budgets.
- Coordinating with Senior Qualitative Researcher in developing concept notes and preparing field work.
- Preparing documents for human research ethics submissions, renewals, and amendments such as consent forms, etc.
- Preparing documents necessary for identifying, screening, recruiting, and training regional researchers.
- Collecting, organizing and managing data, both primary and secondary, at the central and regional levels.
- Conducting data analysis and literature review.
- Contributing to and, in some cases, lead the content and writing of manuscripts, the preparation and revision of research publications, and submission to journals.
- Supporting knowledge dissemination including articles for websites, policy briefs, and oral presentations.
- Completing research administrative tasks.
- Attending seminar, workshop, and training on education research or policy analysis, as well as self-capacity building session.
- Providing training or workshop relevant to the study (methodology, analysis, etc.).
- Actively contributing to and learning about qualitative data management.
- Other relevant tasks as assigned by the Deputy Team Leader
Required qualifications:
- A Master’s degree in social sciences or political science with a minimum of two years relevant work experience, or PhD degree with at least one year relevant working experience, preferably in policy research or education
- Has considerable understanding about and experience implementing various qualitative research methods
- Physically and mentally healthy to conduct field research activities
- Excellent writing skills
- Fluency in verbal and written English and Bahasa Indonesia
- Capacity to work independently as well as in a team
- Capacity to operate computer-assisted qualitative data analysis software, such as Nvivo, is an asset
